Referencing is a must especially as you enter your senior school years. Your references demonstrate a range of things to your teacher including:

  • Demonstrates that you understand your topic
  • Shows how much research you have undertaken
  • Allows the reader to find the information sources you have used
  • Avoids plagiarism
  • Gives credit to people who have authored the sources that you use

Once you enter university referencing is very important and its great to have some idea of what it is all about before you start your university studies.

Check out this short video explaining why referencing is important.

SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) also provide information on referencing, academic writing, evaluating sources and locating evidence.

They also have PDF document specifically for referencing Students Guide to Referencing

There are several apps available to assist you with your referencing. Some are free whilst others are paid apps. RefMe is a free app available for both Android and Apple devices. Microsoft Word also has a referencing tab that you can use to add your sources.

There are several commercial brands of software that are also available but they are really aimed at researchers who are collecting huge numbers of sources for a research project.

With all of the software and the apps available you still need to understand what your reference should look like to avoid mistakes. The apps and software (including microsoft word) only give the correct reference if the information is entered correctly. There is no magic potion for referencing!
